The Department of Veterans Affairs had operated a hospital in Allen Park since 1937, on land Henry and Clara Ford donated for veterans' care, but by the early 1990s Congress authorized a modern replacement facility in Detroit. The new, roughly $229 million John D. Dingell VA Medical Center opened in Midtown Detroit, admitting patients from June 2, 1996, when the move from Allen Park was completed. The hospital was named for US Representative John D. Dingell Jr., who represented southeast Michigan in Congress from 1955 to 2015, a 59-year run that made him the longest-serving member of Congress in American history, and who championed veterans' and health care legislation throughout his career. The medical center remains a full-service VA hospital today, providing care to veterans across metro Detroit as part of the Veterans Health Administration.
