Henry "Jam" Handy, a former Olympic water polo player turned advertising filmmaker, built one of the country's largest industrial film production companies in Detroit, working closely with General Motors and other automakers on training films, sales films, and early motion-graphics advertising from the 1920s through the 1960s. His Jam Handy Organization operated out of this Gothic Revival building on East Grand Boulevard, using it as a sound stage and production studio from the 1930s onward, at the height of his company's influence over how American industry told its own story on film. The building continued in various uses after the Jam Handy Organization's decline, and it has since been restored as a performing-arts and event space known simply as the Jam Handy. Today it hosts concerts, weddings, and other public events in the same rooms where Handy's crews once filmed for Detroit's auto industry.
