03 / The story of this place
What’s it like to stay here?
It began as a summer beach house in 1852, and Great Lakes captain Henry Van Allen moved it about 300 feet back from the shore; his family ran it for decades. After years of decline it was nearly lost, until the Ryba-Callewaert family took over the lease from Mackinac State Historic Parks in 1969 and restored it. It became a Michigan Historic Landmark in 1973, and a 1990s addition brought an indoor pool, a hot tub and suites. Today it has 94 rooms, sits inside Mackinac Island State Park across from the harbor, and is open May through October.
