The Archdiocese of Detroit opened Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield in 1928 as one of its large Catholic burial grounds serving the growing metro Detroit area, eventually spreading across some 350 acres and recording more than 100,000 burials, including many bishops, priests and members of religious orders. Father Charles Coughlin, the Depression-era radio priest whose broadcasts reached tens of millions before his antisemitic and pro-fascist rhetoric got him pulled off the air, is buried here following his death in 1979. Cardinal Edmund Szoka, who led the Archdiocese of Detroit through the 1980s before serving in senior Vatican financial posts under three popes, was buried at Holy Sepulchre in a private ceremony after his death in 2014. The cemetery remains an active Catholic burial ground today, run by Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services for the archdiocese, with a mausoleum built in 1950 and several devotional shrines on its grounds.
