The Historic Howell Theater opened on East Grand River Avenue on December 11, 1928 with Marion Davies in Show People. The Locey family built it with a stage and orchestra pit for live acts alongside the movies, and it replaced the smaller Temple Theatre and the closed Howell Opera House as the town's entertainment venue. Schulte Amusement of Detroit renovated it in 1938 with roomier seats, new projection and a new marquee. Today it's a two-screen independent cinema mixing new releases with classic series, plus comedy and private events. In October 2026 the Hitchcocktober series shows The Birds on October 10 and Suspicion on October 14, and the 12 HOUR HORROR MOVIE INVASION takes over on October 3.

Plan your visit

Admission is $8.95; students, seniors 60+ and military pay $7.95, and kids 3 to 12 pay $5.95. The box office opens 30 minutes before the day's first show; park free in front, behind and on both side streets, just not in the private lot next door.

Accessibility

Accessible facility: a wheelchair lift in the lobby bypasses the five steps up to the auditoriums; groups with several wheelchairs can arrange rear entry at theatre level.
