Henry Ford High School opened its doors on September 5, 1957, on a twenty-three-acre site on Evergreen Road, built to take the overflow of students from crowded nearby schools like Cooley, Mumford, and Redford. Named for the automaker, the school became a fixture of Detroit's northwest side, in the neighborhood now known as Old Redford. Politician Monica Conyers, who later served on the Detroit City Council and became its president before a corruption conviction, graduated from Henry Ford High School in 1982. After Detroit Public Schools closed Redford High School in 2007, Henry Ford absorbed much of that school's surrounding community as well. It remains an operating Detroit Public Schools Community District high school today.
