For most of the twentieth century, Hamtramck High School operated from a building at Wyandotte and Hewitt streets, serving the densely packed, largely Polish immigrant city surrounded entirely by Detroit. Future congressman Lucien Nedzi graduated from that building in 1943, and actress Gail Kobe, later a soap-opera star and Emmy-winning producer, graduated in the 1940s as well. Longtime coach Jean Hoxie built the school's Cosmos tennis program there into a Michigan powerhouse from the 1940s through the 1960s, turning working-class Hamtramck kids into state champions. In 1970 the district moved Hamtramck High into the building that had been Copernicus Middle School, at Charest Street, and the high school has operated from that address ever since. The Wyandotte Street building no longer houses the school, but Hamtramck High continues as a public high school today, still educating the city's diverse, largely immigrant population.
