Hamtramck City Hall now occupies a building that once served the tightly packed, roughly two-square-mile city as St. Francis Hospital. City offices moved in, and the police department eventually followed, relocating into City Hall in 2003 after Hamtramck's state-appointed emergency financial manager consolidated several departments to save money during a fiscal crisis. The building sits across the street from what had been a convent used by the Sisters of St. Francis. In November 2021, Yemeni-born Amer Ghalib was elected mayor of Hamtramck, becoming the first Yemeni American mayor in the United States and one of the first Arab Muslim mayors of a major U.S. city, and he governed from this building starting in 2022. Hamtramck, long known for waves of Polish, and more recently Yemeni, Bangladeshi and Bosnian immigration, still runs its city government from this Evaline Street address today.
