Grosse Pointe Theatre was founded in 1947 by 22-year-old drama teacher Russel Werneken, starting with 30 members who met at the Alger House, and it staged its first show, Clarence, in 1948. From 1962 it played for almost 55 years in the Fries Auditorium of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, signing off there in 2017 with Beauty and the Beast; in 1981 it bought a 1913 former boarding house on Fisher Road for offices and rehearsals. After a few seasons in school auditoriums, it moved in 2025 to the new A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Center for the Performing Arts. With more than 300 volunteer members, it has staged over 336 main-stage productions. The 2026–27 season brings Les Misérables September 18 to October 11, 2026, Irving Berlin's White Christmas December 4–20, 2026, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time April 15–25, 2027.
