Grosse Pointe Country Day School opened in 1915 as a private day school for Grosse Pointe children, and actress Julie Harris, born in 1925, attended it as a girl in the 1930s and 1940s before going on to a Broadway and film career. In 1954 the school merged with Detroit University School, founded in 1899, to create Grosse Pointe University School, which used Detroit University School's campus on Cook Road in Grosse Pointe Woods, occupied since 1928. That school merged again in 1969 with the older Liggett School, founded in 1878, to form today's University Liggett School, a coeducational, college-preparatory school that still occupies the Cook Road campus. No trace of the original Grosse Pointe Country Day School buildings remains under that name; its history survives only as one strand of University Liggett's lineage.
