The Grand Riviera opened in 1925 as Detroit's first atmospheric theater, using painted skies and garden-like decor to make its 3,000 seats feel like they were outdoors under the stars. A four-story octagonal tower and a lit-up vertical marquee announced the theater along Grand River Avenue for decades. Joseph Z. Nederlander, whose family built one of the country's biggest theater chains, worked with the Riviera through the mid-20th century as part of the Nederlander operations around Detroit. The theater stopped showing movies in 1969, hosted rock concerts for a few more years until 1974, and then sat empty and decaying through the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s. By 1996 the structure was considered unsafe and the city tore it down. A Social Security Administration office has occupied the site since 2001, with no trace of the old movie palace left standing.
