Gilda Radner, born in Detroit in 1946, became one of the original stars of Saturday Night Live, famous for characters like Roseanne Roseannadanna and Emily Litella. After she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1985, she found comfort and support at a small cancer-support center in California and later wrote about how much that community meant to her. Following her death in 1989, her therapist Joanna Bull and Radner's widower, actor Gene Wilder, founded Gilda's Club to bring the same kind of free emotional support to cancer patients and their families, opening the first clubhouse in New York in 1995. Gilda's Club Metro Detroit followed in 1998, the second club nationwide, set up inside a sprawling Victorian house on Rochester Road in Royal Oak with the help of Radner's brother Michael and a group of local supporters. The clubhouse still offers free support groups, workshops and programs for anyone affected by cancer today.
