General Motors hired Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen to design this six-hundred-acre research and design campus in Warren, his first major independent commission and one of the earliest and most influential corporate campuses in the country. Built in stages and dedicated in 1956, the Tech Center grouped low modernist buildings, reflecting pools and a water tower around a small lake, with landscaping by Thomas Church. Sculptor Harry Bertoia created his first major commission here, a 36-foot metal wall screen, in 1953, and designer Ruth Adler Schnee's textiles and ceramicist Maija Grotell's glaze formulas both went into the buildings' interiors and colored brick walls. Photographer Balthazar Korab, then working for Saarinen's firm, documented the campus as it rose. The Tech Center is still GM's main engineering and design headquarters; it was named a National Historic Landmark in 2014 but remains a working corporate site closed to the general public.
