In 1989, Detroit techno producers Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood formed Underground Resistance, a label and collective that fused techno's electronic sound with the politics and struggle of inner-city Detroit. Banks built Submerge, the distribution company behind Underground Resistance and a roster of Detroit techno labels, around a building on Grand River Avenue, where the crew worked, pressed and shipped records through the 1990s and helped turn Detroit techno into a genre with fans across Europe and beyond. Submerge and Underground Resistance outgrew the Grand River space and relocated a few miles away to East Grand Boulevard in the early 2000s, where the label still operates today alongside the Exhibit 3000 techno museum. The old Grand River building came down at some point afterward, and the site is now an empty parking lot with no trace of the operation that once ran there.
