Sunnie Wilson, a fixture of Detroit's Black entertainment scene sometimes called the unofficial mayor of Paradise Valley, opened the Forest Club at Hastings and East Forest in 1941. It was less a single club than an indoor amusement park, reportedly as big in floor space as Madison Square Garden, with a 107-foot bar, a banquet hall, a bowling alley and a roller skating rink all under one roof. Wilson also partnered with boxing champion Joe Louis on the nearby Brown Bomber Chicken Shack, and together they helped make Paradise Valley one of the liveliest Black nightlife districts in the country. Wilson sold the Forest Club in 1951, and the building kept operating for a while under new owners, but the whole Paradise Valley and Black Bottom district was cleared out in the early 1960s to build the I-375 freeway, taking the Forest Club's site with it. Nothing from the club survives today.
