Ford River Rouge Complex

Henry Ford built this vast integrated factory on the Rouge River starting in 1917, and by the late 1920s it had grown into the largest industrial complex in the world, turning raw iron ore, rubber and glass into finished cars within its own walls. Architect Albert Kahn designed the complex's mile-long buildings through the 1920s and 1930s, developing the factory-design style that shaped American industry. In 1932 the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera spent weeks sketching the plant's furnaces, assembly lines and workers, material he turned into the Detroit Industry murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The Rouge remains a working Ford plant today, now centered on the F-150 pickup, and part of it is open to visitors through the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, run by The Henry Ford museum.
