The Flame opened in 1949 as a student bar on West Washington Street and, during the 1960s, became the gathering place for Ann Arbor's gay community. It was small and famously unpolished, yet for roughly four decades it remained the city's main gay bar. It closed in 1998, and the space later became Logan restaurant.
