Fellowship Chapel, a congregation in the United Church of Christ, was founded in Detroit in 1966. Its second senior pastor, the Reverend Wendell Anthony, took over the pulpit in February 1987 and built the church into one of the city's most prominent African American congregations, closely tied to civil rights and community organizing through his decades as head of the Detroit NAACP. The chapel became a national news story on April 19, 2006, when it hosted the funeral of Detroit rapper Proof of the group D12, drawing a full house of about 2,660 mourners, including his close friend and collaborator Eminem. The chapel still stands on West Outer Drive and continues as an active congregation under Anthony's leadership.
