Russian immigrant bakers Ben and Perry Feigenson started Feigenson Brothers Bottle Works in Detroit in November 1907, flavoring their first sodas with the same fruity frostings they had used on cakes back home and delivering bottles by horse-drawn wagon. The brothers' business grew steadily, moving first to a plant on Beaubien Street before the company, renamed Faygo in 1921 for easier branding on the bottle, built a larger, modern bottling plant at 3579 Gratiot Avenue on Detroit's east side in 1935. Faygo has been produced at this same Gratiot Avenue plant ever since, through ownership changes and decades of Michigan pop culture, its wide range of flavors becoming a distinctly Detroit institution recognized nationwide, especially among fans of the Detroit hip-hop group Insane Clown Posse. The plant remains an active, operating bottling facility today.
