The Engineering Society of Detroit

Detroit's engineering society since 1895: professional awards, conferences and engineering academies for kids.

01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The Engineering Society of Detroit began in 1895, when thirteen University of Michigan engineering students formed the Detroit Association of Graduate Engineers. The Depression wiped out 75% of its members, but support from the Rackham Engineering Fund revived it, growing membership from 523 in 1930 to 2,396 by 1938, and in 1942 it moved into the Horace H. Rackham Memorial Building. Now based in Southfield, it runs conferences, awards and youth engineering academies.

  1. Founded by U-M engineering students in 1895
  2. Called the Rackham Memorial Building home for 50 years
  3. Girls in Engineering and Boys in Engineering academies
  4. Construction and Design Awards
