03 / The story of this place

What’s it like to stay here?

Element fills the 15-story Metropolitan Building, a neo-Gothic 1925 tower by Weston and Ellington nicknamed the Jeweler's Building for the jewelry makers and wholesalers inside. It closed in 1977 and sat empty and crumbling for four decades until a $23.2 million conversion was approved in 2015. The hotel opened in December 2018 with 110 rooms set up for short and extended stays. Up top is the Monarch Club, one of downtown's best-known rooftop bars, downstairs is The Lone Goat pub, and breakfast at Rise is free, as are the bikes. The Fox Theatre, Comerica Park and the Broadway People Mover station are steps away.
