Discount Records operated for decades at 300 South State Street near the University of Michigan's central campus, a fixture of Ann Arbor's record-shopping scene by the early 1960s. Store manager Jeep Holland presided over the shop in the late 1960s, a period when a young Jim Osterberg, soon to reinvent himself as Iggy Pop, worked there as a stock boy while forming what would become the Stooges. Saxophonist Steve Mackay, who later supplied the searing sax solo on the Stooges' 'Fun House,' also worked at the store, staying on into 1976 while playing in local bands like Carnal Kitchen and the Mojo Boogie Band. The shop eventually closed, and the storefront later became a Potbelly Sandwich Shop, leaving little visible trace of its role in Ann Arbor's rock and roll history.
