01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
DeVries & Co. traces back to 1887, when Rudolph Hirt Jr. opened the R. Hirt Jr. Company to sell Detroit butter, eggs and cheese. He built the store in two halves, in 1893 and 1904, and the original Otis freight elevator still runs, one of the oldest working freight elevators in Wayne County. Son-in-law Clarence DeVries joined in 1924, and the retail shop took the DeVries name in 2011 while staying in the family. Come for cheeses from 14 countries, Michigan-made treats, coffee, oils and vinegars.
