The Detroit Waldorf School occupies an Albert Kahn–designed building in the Indian Village neighborhood that opened in 1914 as Eastern Liggett, a college-preparatory school for girls. When Liggett moved to Grosse Pointe in the mid-1960s, the newly formed Waldorf School Association of Michigan bought the building and opened Michigan's first Waldorf school there in 1966, teaching the Rudolf Steiner curriculum and becoming one of Detroit's first racially integrated private schools. Singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens attended the school in the late 1970s and early 1980s before his family left Detroit. Rapper Big Sean also attended as a child in the 1990s, growing up in the surrounding east-side neighborhood. The school still operates in the same historic building, now marked with a state historical marker.
