The Detroit Times occupied an Albert Kahn–designed building at Cass Avenue and Times Square in downtown Detroit, completed in 1929 with a lavish Art Deco lobby and printing presses on site. Actor and longtime Inside the Actors Studio host James Lipton worked here as a copy boy for the Hearst-owned paper in the early 1940s, before his acting and writing career took shape. The Detroit Times folded in 1960 after its rival, the Detroit News, bought it out, but the News kept running the building's presses as a printing plant until 1975, when a new facility opened in Sterling Heights. The vacated building was demolished in 1978, and the site is now a triangular surface parking lot — though the surrounding downtown street still carries the name Times Square.
