03 / The story of this place
What was here?
The Detroit Plaza opened in 1977 in the central tower of John Portman's Renaissance Center, the Ford-led “city within a city” built to revive downtown. Run by Western International Hotels (later Westin), it was then the tallest hotel in the world and the chain's flagship, with the revolving Summit restaurant at the top. Its roughly 1,400 rooms nearly doubled downtown's hotel count, and about 475,000 room nights were booked between 1977 and 1981. It was later renamed The Westin Hotel Renaissance Center Detroit and is now the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, still the tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.
