Detroit Lions

Detroit's NFL team since 1934: Honolulu blue, Sundays at downtown's Ford Field and a city that lives and breathes football.

01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The Detroit Lions are the city's NFL team, playing in the NFC North. The franchise began in 1928 as the Portsmouth Spartans in Ohio, joined the NFL in 1930 and moved to Detroit in 1934, taking the Lions name as a nod to the Tigers. They won four NFL Championship Games between 1935 and 1957, wear the team's own "Honolulu blue" and silver, and play home games at Ford Field downtown, where game days spill into Greektown and Eastern Market tailgates.
