Detroit Country Day School was founded in Detroit in 1914 by headmaster F. Alden Shaw, part of the era's Country Day School movement that combined a rigorous prep-school curriculum with daily athletics. The school moved from the city to its present campus on West Thirteen Mile Road in Beverly Hills in 1958 and later grew into a multi-campus PreK-12 system across Beverly Hills and Bloomfield Township. Steve Ballmer, later CEO of Microsoft and owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, grew up in the Detroit area and graduated from Detroit Country Day as valedictorian in 1973. The private school remains one of the region's leading college-preparatory institutions today.
