The Detroit Athletic Club began in 1887 as an amateur sports club, but by 1913 its ambitious board, led by Packard president Henry B. Joy, commissioned architect Albert Kahn to design a grand new clubhouse modeled on Rome's Palazzo Farnese. The building opened on Madison Street on April 15, 1915, and within two years the club's roughly two thousand members controlled well over ninety percent of the world's automobile production, making the DAC the unofficial boardroom of the auto industry. In 1922 the club hired French-born bandleader Jean Goldkette as its musical director, a post he held for more than twenty years while also fronting Detroit's top dance orchestra and co-owning the Graystone Ballroom. The Detroit Athletic Club still operates as a private club today, its Kahn-designed clubhouse largely unchanged and still hosting members in the heart of downtown Detroit.
