Albert Kahn designed this Arts and Crafts manor for newspaper publisher George Gough Booth and his wife Ellen Scripps Booth, who moved in when it was completed in 1908 and lived here until 1949. The Booths used their fortune and this estate as the seed of the entire Cranbrook Educational Community, founding the Academy of Art, Cranbrook School, Kingswood School, the Institute of Science and Christ Church Cranbrook on the surrounding land over the following decades. The house's roughly 40 acres of formal and informal gardens, designed with landscape architects over many years, remain one of the finest Arts and Crafts era estates in the Midwest. Cranbrook House and Gardens is today operated as a nonprofit museum, offering public tours of the house and gardens.
