01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Clutch Cargo's occupied the church, with its stained glass and vaulted ceiling, and had a lower-level lounge called the Mill Street Entry; the sanctuary and balcony held about 650 people. The Cocteau Twins were the first band booked, in summer 1996, and later the room hosted the Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aphex Twin, the Deftones, Spiritualized, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Katy Perry and Less Than Jake, while on non-concert nights it ran as a dance club. The name continued an earlier Clutch Cargo's at 64 W. Elizabeth St. in downtown Detroit, which booked the Damned, Dead Kennedys and the Misfits in the 1980s; the Pontiac club closed on November 14, 2013.
