Gus Guerra, who invented Detroit-style pizza in 1946 at his bar Buddy's Rendezvous on Detroit's east side, sold that original spot in 1953 and opened this bar with his wife Anna a few miles away on Gratiot Avenue, in what's now Eastpointe. He brought the same recipe with him — a thick, square pie baked in blue steel pans with caramelized, cheese-crisped edges — and Cloverleaf became one of the dish's two founding houses, alongside Buddy's. An electrical fire destroyed the building in 1993, but the Guerra family rebuilt on the same spot, and Gus's children Marie and Jack still run it today. Cloverleaf remains one of the oldest continuously family-run purveyors of Detroit-style pizza anywhere.
