01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Anthony Bartak, Charles Wilhelm and Frank Votruba built the opera house in 1891 to a design by architect E. R. Prall, and it was the first building in Traverse City with electric lights. Closed from the 1920s until 1985, it is now on the National Register and run by a nonprofit that presents touring singer-songwriters, roots, bluegrass and jazz acts plus comedy. The hall has a barrel-vault ceiling, frescoes and maple floors.
