Charles A. Lindbergh, the pilot who flew alone and nonstop from New York to Paris in May 1927, was born in Detroit on February 4, 1902. The birth took place in a three-story Queen Anne house at 1120 West Forest Avenue that belonged to his grandfather, Charles H. Land, a Detroit dentist and inventor. His mother, Evangeline Lodge Land Lindbergh, came home to her parents for the birth, though the family lived in Minnesota. Young Charles kept coming back for long visits, and his grandfather let him try out experiments in the basement workshop, feeding his love of machines. After the Paris flight turned him into the most famous man on earth, a historical marker went up at the house that same year. Detroit did not hold on to it: the house was torn down in 1973, and a Wayne State University housing building now stands on the lot. The marker has since been removed too.
