Chadsey High School opened on Martin Street in southwest Detroit in 1931, named for longtime Detroit schools superintendent Charles E. Chadsey. Tuskegee Airman Alexander Jefferson, who would go on to fly combat missions over Europe and survive months as a prisoner of war, graduated from Chadsey in 1938. The school served generations of southwest Detroit families for nearly eighty years until Detroit Public Schools, facing a $285 million budget deficit, closed it in June 2009 along with dozens of other buildings citywide. The vacant building was torn down in March 2011, and Munger Elementary-Middle School now stands on the site.
