Opened in 2004 by Jason Johnson and Christian Dorsey near Woodward Avenue and Forest Street in Midtown Detroit, Bob's Classic Kicks built its name as a sneaker boutique that doubled as a gathering point for the city's hip-hop scene. Beginning around 2009, artist and promoter Sheefy McFly ran a recurring freestyle and performance showcase called The Air Up There out of the store, giving local rappers a stage in front of an audience that already came for the shoes. Detroit rapper Dej Loaf, who would go on to national attention with her 2014 single Try Me, performed at the showcase in its early editions before her career took off. The store has continued operating on Woodward Avenue, remaining part of Detroit's sneaker and streetwear culture.
