Bates Academy is a Detroit Public Schools Community District school for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, built around a curriculum for academically talented and gifted students since 1981. Naima Mora, who went on to win the fourth cycle of America's Next Top Model in 2005, attended Bates Academy for middle school in the 1990s before continuing her education elsewhere in Detroit. The school remains one of the district's application-based programs for high-achieving students, drawing families from across the city for its academic reputation. It continues to operate at its Wyoming Street location on Detroit's northwest side.
