Alexander Macomb was born in Detroit in 1782, when it was still a small fur-trading outpost, and went on to become one of the most celebrated American generals of his time. He commanded the outnumbered American forces that defeated a British invasion at the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814, a victory that helped push Britain toward ending the War of 1812, and he later served as commanding general of the entire U.S. Army until his death in 1841. Detroit remembered its native son with a bronze statue by sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman, dedicated in 1908 and set in the median of Washington Boulevard near Michigan Avenue, in the heart of downtown. It shows Macomb in uniform, sword in hand, looking out over one of Detroit's grandest streets. The statue still stands there today.
