Architect Albert Kahn, who would go on to design Detroit's great auto factories and skyscrapers, built this house for his own family at 208 Mack Avenue in 1906. He fused Prairie-style horizontality with English Renaissance details and used the reinforced-concrete Kahn System, developed by his brother Julius, to make the house fireproof and soundproof, a showcase of the engineering that made his firm famous. Kahn added a large gallery in 1928 to display his art collection and lived here until his death on December 8, 1942. His family sold the house to the Detroit Urban League at a nominal price, and the organization has used it as its headquarters ever since, keeping the building's civic role alive. It is recognized as a Michigan State Historic Site.
