The Detroit story
McClure, nicknamed "Skeeter," won gold in the light middleweight division at the 1960 Rome Olympics as a teammate of Cassius Clay, the future Muhammad Ali, and turned professional the following year, compiling a 24-8-1 record over a decade in the ring without quite breaking through to a title shot. After retiring from boxing he pursued psychology, earning his doctorate at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1973. He went on to a career as a university professor, counselor and, later, a Massachusetts state boxing commissioner, carrying his Detroit graduate training into decades of work helping athletes and students.
