The Detroit story
Kozlov was a 45th-overall draft pick who made his NHL debut with Detroit in 1992 and became a full-time Red Wing the following season. When the club acquired Igor Larionov in 1995, coach Scotty Bowman built the celebrated Russian Five line around Kozlov, Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Slava Fetisov, whose passing game reshaped how the Red Wings played. The unit helped carry Detroit to the Stanley Cup in 1997, ending a 42-year championship drought, and again in 1998. Kozlov stayed in Detroit for a full decade before being traded to Buffalo in 2001 as part of the deal that brought goaltender Dominik Hašek to the Red Wings. He briefly returned on a training-camp contract in 2020.
