The Detroit story
Namestnikov was born in Voskresensk, Russia, but moved to the United States when he was only eight months old, settling with his family in Michigan; his uncle, former Red Wing Vyacheslav Kozlov, had played over 1,000 NHL games, including years in Detroit. After a career that began with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Namestnikov signed with the Red Wings as a free agent in October 2020, returning to play for the team his family had followed while he was growing up nearby. He spent roughly a season and a half in Detroit, playing at Little Caesars Arena, before being traded to the Dallas Stars in March 2022.
