The Detroit story
Viviane Bowman was born in Detroit, one of twelve children of a contractor and carpenter, and at eight joined the choir at the International Gospel Center; as a teenager she formed a short-lived group, International Sounds of Deliverance. She married Marvin Winans and took the family name (they divorced in 1995). Her debut Be Encouraged (1987) on Light Records reached No. 3 on the spiritual chart and earned a Grammy nomination. She drew controversy with the more contemporary The Lady (1991), but her concert albums recorded at home were big successes: Live in Detroit II (1999) sold more than 112,000 copies in its first month and won three Stellar Awards. Bringing It All Together (2003), led by "Shake Yourself Loose", spent nine weeks at No. 1, and Woman to Woman (2006) and How I Got Over (2009) also topped the gospel chart. She has won eight Stellar Awards and been nominated for seven Grammys.
