The Detroit story
Karon Vantrees was born in Detroit and grew up on the west side along Seven Mile Road. He dreamed of playing guard in the NBA, sold fruit to make money as a teenager and has spoken openly about youthful struggles with lean and other drugs. He only started rapping in the summer of 2019, inspired by Detroit crews such as the Street Lord'z, Doughboyz Cashout and Team Eastside. His second single, “Rusty”, caught the ear of Babyface Ray, who paid for his first music video, and his debut mixtape Navy Wavy arrived that September with guests Babyface Ray and Peezy. His whispered, off-beat delivery quickly became a model for younger rappers far beyond Detroit. After signing with Warner Records he released his debut album Ganger (2023), which reached the Billboard 200 and included “GOMD”, remixed with Lil Uzi Vert. His 2024 single “Sorry Not Sorry” with Lil Yachty gave him his first Billboard Hot 100 entry.
