The Detroit story
Trick-Trick, born Christian Mathis in Detroit in 1973, is a rapper and record producer whose whole career has been rooted in his hometown's hip-hop scene. He came up as a member of the Goon Sqwad, a Detroit collective, and built a reputation as a hard-edged street voice during the years when Eminem, D12, Proof and Royce da 5'9" were putting Detroit rap on the national map. His debut album, The People vs. (2005), was led by “Welcome 2 Detroit,” a tour of the city's neighborhoods and attitude featuring Eminem, which became a local anthem. He followed it with The Villain (2008), which included another Eminem collaboration, “Who Want It.” He has remained a visible figure in Detroit hip-hop as a performer, producer and outspoken defender of the city's reputation.
