The Detroit story
Detroit drafted Tatar 60th overall in 2009 and signed him that September, sending him first to the Grand Rapids Griffins to develop. He made his full NHL push after the 2012–13 lockout and quickly turned into a dependable scorer, at one point ranking among the NHL's leaders in a single week's goals in January 2015 while helping the Red Wings to a run of victories. The club signed him to two contract extensions, in 2014 and 2017, as he grew into one of Detroit's top forwards during a period when the Red Wings still reached the playoffs every year. He played at both Joe Louis Arena and the new Little Caesars Arena before being traded during the 2017–18 season as the team began a rebuild.
