The Detroit story
Detroit acquired Sandström from Pittsburgh in a January 1997 trade for centre Greg Johnson, bringing in a physical, injury-tested winger for the season's playoff push. The move paid off that June: in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against Philadelphia, Sandström set up Darren McCarty's championship-clinching goal, helping end Detroit's 42-year wait for the Cup. It was a short but perfectly timed stay in a career otherwise built around the Rangers and Kings, and it left him with a championship ring from the single season he wore the winged wheel.
