The Detroit story
Selleck was born in Detroit in 1945 and lived there until 1948, when his family moved to Los Angeles and settled in Sherman Oaks. He kept one Detroit loyalty for life: the Tigers. As private investigator Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988) he regularly wore a Tigers cap, putting the team's old English D on prime-time television for eight seasons. On May 25, 1986, wearing a Tigers uniform with No. 14, he joined the team for batting practice at Tiger Stadium and drove balls over the right-field fence, one into the upper deck. In 1991 he trained with the Tigers again to prepare for the baseball comedy Mr. Baseball, and for a time he held a minority stake in the club. Beyond Detroit, he won an Emmy for Magnum in 1984, starred in Three Men and a Baby and spent fourteen seasons as police commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods.
