The Detroit story
Tim Wood was born in Highland Park, the city surrounded by Detroit, and began skating at the Detroit Skating Club at the age of seven under English coach Ronnie Baker. He grew into the leading American man of the late 1960s, a period when U.S. figure skating was rebuilding after the 1961 plane crash that killed the entire national team. He won the U.S. title three years running, from 1968 to 1970, and took the silver medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. He then won the World Championships in 1969 and 1970, making him one of the few American men of his era to hold a world title and a proud name in the Detroit Skating Club's long history. After his amateur career he skated professionally. He was later inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
