The Detroit story
Theo Parrish was born in Washington, D.C., in 1972 and grew up in Chicago, absorbing Miles Davis, Nina Simone and George Gershwin alongside house music. He studied at the Chicago Academy of the Arts and the Kansas City Art Institute, where he made sound sculptures from live instruments, voices and loops, graduating in 1994. He then moved to Detroit and quickly joined its underground: his track “Lake Shore Drive” appeared in 1995 as the B-side of a Moodymann 12-inch. In 1997 he launched his own label, Sound Signature, and his debut album First Floor followed in 1998. Parrish became known for long DJ sets that mix disco, jazz, soul and obscure new wave, heavily equalized in real time, and for slow-burning productions made on an Akai MPC. He belongs to Detroit's 3 Chairs collective with Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman, and his label has launched younger Detroiters such as Jay Daniel.
